During my pregnancy the most opened document on my computer was “Baby shopping list and purchases”, I caught up with a friend last week who asked for the list, so I thought I’d share it here as well.  I’ve added links to the products we went with on recommendations, so you can check things out in more detail  if you like.

It started out as a simple list of everything I was supposed to buy in order to keep a new baby alive.  I added everything from the store lists and then sat with my sister who helped me cross most of the stuff off!  I cleared out the RRP and the price I ended up paying columns, because that will always change, but was pleased (as was my man) that we got everything we wanted and more for less than 1/2 of the RRP with some smart shopping.  We we’re lucky enough to be able to borrow some of the bigger items – like the bassinet, travel cot and we’re given a pram from my bestie, so that helped a lot with the budget.

I loved and appreciated getting different opinions on what worked for different people.  In a new world that was totally overwhelming, it was a great spot to start.

Everyones lists will be different, every baby will love different things. We rushed out and picked up a McLaren rocker as it was a saviour for my sister, my baby hated it…. I mean really really hated it.  My sister in law loaned us her baby bjorn bouncer and he loved that – go figure!  So you’ll never really know what will work for your baby until it arrives, but you can be organised.

I would add a whole new section for boob care!  Hydrogel Pads and Lansinoh are the best – along with a cold pack or two!  Thankfully a friend sorted me out with a boob care pack for my baby shower!

I also LOVED the dentons bump pillow, such a saviour for a good nights sleep!

AND our Melo baby nappy tote!  So much better than carting a full nappy bag around! (In my opinion – and I already had a bunch of handbags that are big enough for that and some clothes.

Aside from the big chain stores, have a look at places like Zanui for some great baby and nursery stuff.

Baby clothes I kept in a different spreadsheet, so I could keep track of what we had!

I was in massive danger of buying WAY too much tiny cute stuff.  So the spreadsheet helped me keep tabs of what we had and what I needed to get.  I LOVED Bonds, Pure Baby, Marquis for onesies and singlets.  Most of the cute lil old man clothes I picked up in Hawaii on our baby moon, which was possibly the best fun I have EVER had shopping!  I didn’t get too many 0000 as I knew we were having a reasonable sized baby and a million people had told me don’t get them, they’re out of them in two weeks and if you need them, someone can go pick up a few suits easily.

In hindsight – I would have bought loads more dribble bibs, other than that, I felt a bit ripped off when my son arrived that I couldn’t keep shopping.  So don’t get too much too early – you can always shop online!  We we’re given so many cute outfits – I really appreciated a pram suit, having a June baby.  It was so good to just zip over the top of a onsie.

On zips – look for onsies with zips and a two way zip is even better, trust me on this. If your average grow suit has 10 press studs (don’t quote me I can’t remember) and you’re changing 12 nappies a day.. save your fingers and get zips.  I also preferred sleeveless onsies to singlets as they didn’t climb up babies back, so I felt like he was warmer.

If you’re on a budget and freaking out at how much stuff a tiny person needs, don’t worry!  There are loads of sites that have great online sales and deals(here’s a blog on some of my favs to stalk for great offers )  local facebook buy, sell swap kids and maternity pages, there are facebook pages for specific pram sites and anything else you could wish for.  While it’s nice to have beautiful new things, remember your baby will only use things for a few months at a time potentially, so they only get limited use!  Friends with slightly older bubs may be kind enough to keep an eye out for stuff you don’t know you need yet – like baby swings, jumperoos etc and tag you in when they spot a great deal on something that you may not buy yourself otherwise.

For the big ticket stuff – get in early and get out quick from wherever you are shopping to avoid any chaos.  We did our research online and then headed to baby bunting first thing and we’re lucky enough to get a great shop assistant who was a mum and really helped us out.

Take a look at some of these stores that I LOVED!

Zanui for furniture and toys – loads of great feeding chairs, bassinets, drawers and everything else baby – down to change and safety stuff.

The Little Linen Company for sheets and blankets.  I love the Little Bamboo Heirloom Blanket, Weegoamigo muslins and blankets and the Little Bamboo sheets.  At around 4 months we also ended up with the air wrap bumpers to stop dummies falling out.

Biome is great for glass bottles, baby wipes, skin care.  They have loads of stuff, I used this more as my boy got older and I needed snacks and sippy cups.  Our Life Factory glass bottle and Klean Kanteen sippy cup has out lasted all of the plastic ones we had!  They also do awesome snack containers from Kids Conserve.

What did you really love as a new mum, is there anything you’d add to the list?
