One of the big challenges of being a mum is, of course, to withstand the urge to simply put your kids in front of the TV or the iPad in order to keep them entertained. That way, they will be out of your way and won’t nag you about being bored, right?

While it is understandable that you need some time off from parenting the whole time, there are actually a few other ways to keep them from causing mayhem out of pure boredom.

Here is a handful of the best ways to keep your kids entertained when you’re trying to enjoy your time off – either by yourself or as a family.

Baking with kids

If you feel like cooking up something awesome, you might as well include your kids in all the fun. They can be great little helpers, in any way, and you won’t have to feel guilty about seeing them in front of the screen all day. So put your apron on and get started with these great pastries you can bake up together with your kids.

You can ask them to help you with the cooking as well, though, but it does tend to include more cutting with knives and less kneading soft doughs.

If you want your child to help out nonetheless, you can always just get some plastic knives and ask them to help out with cutting the soft veggies such as mushrooms and tomatoes. Keep in mind that they should be five years of age or older, however, and ask the younger ones to help you by rinsing the herbs and tearing the lettuce instead.

Baking and cooking with your children are great ways to teach them life skills while also doing something fun together that doesn’t take you out of your holiday mood. If you don’t usually bake, this will be an even better time to get started – and you can make a tradition out of your holiday brownies in the future.

Be active together

Children of all ages love to be active and if they don’t, they’re simply not used to it. Try to join your kids for whatever activities they love to do, whether it’s roller skating in the summer, cycling around the neighbourhood or going to the ice skating park during winter.

If you don’t have any of these parks near you, you can always have a look at Fantasy World Entertainment for some great options. These rinks can be used during summer as well, by the way, so you have some fun alternatives for the next birthday coming up.

When you make sure that your kids are active and get to spend their energy on something else than the screen in front of them, you’re also making sure that they stay off your back once you get home. That way, you can enjoy being active together and relaxing together afterwards – and nobody can complain about being bored.

Let them be creative

It is important to keep in mind, though, that being a bit bored is good for your kid. They shouldn’t have everything set up for them all the time as not having anything in particular to do tends to boost their creativity a bit; what can they do in order to keep themselves occupied?

Being bored means that your kid needs to think for themselves and come up with something entertaining. If you manage to provide them with the tools they need, such as books to read, colouring books to fill out, kid-friendly glue and glitter, you never know what they might be able to come up with.

All of those games and toys for kids are there for a reason, after all, but you don’t have to invest in the most expensive ones. Just a bit of paint and some colouring pencils should be enough for them to entertain themselves with, really, and you can look forward to endless pieces of art to hang on your office wall when you’re back from that holiday.

Play some video games together

Finally, you should consider having fun with your kids on their terms once in a while. Let them teach you to play some of their video games as well and show them just how much of an awesome parent you can be.

There are many benefits to doing this, by the way, such as being able to stay involved in your children’s’ interests, understanding the games they like to play, and, of course, having fun together.

You might be surprised at just how much fun it can be to play games and let your kid be the teacher for once – and you get to see a different side of them where they are in charge. It might actually be good for you too, by the way.

That way, you will have a much better understanding of the games they are playing when you wish they were running around in the garden instead, and might even be able to be engaged and enthusiastic about it. Even if you don’t get wrapped up in it, at least your kid knows that you gave it a shot.

While the holidays and your weekends off are for relaxing, there is actually nothing better than being able to do this with your kids. Rather than trying to find ways for them to stay entertained on their own, you should try to have fun together and try some new things.

Go roller skating, head out for a picnic in the forest, bake up a large batch of brownies, and enjoy the comfortable silence around 9 pm. A day full of fun with their parents mean that they will be quiet in the evening; hopefully wrapped up in a book but probably just playing Minecraft.
