Speak to your child

No matter how old your child is, if they are struggling at school it could be worth having a chat with them about it. Sit down together and ask them what exactly they are struggling with and whether there’s anything that you can do to help. If their teacher has explained where the concern lies, talk to your child about it. Make sure to be careful not to upset them, instead ask them how they feel they’re getting on. The chances are that if your child is a little older, they will be aware that they’re not doing as well as they should be.

Get them extra help

If the school feels it’s appropriate, then you may want to look into getting your child extra help. How about getting them some extra tuition to help to ensure that they are able to achieve their full potential? If you can’t afford to have someone come to your home to tutor them, how about utilising resources like Tuty, a private tutoring platform online? While you could opt to teach them yourself, unless you have educational experience, it might be best to hire a professional. After all, it’s crucial that they receive the right help.

Show them that learning is fun

Often, the number one reason why children don’t do well at school is because they find learning boring. However, if you can spend some time teaching them that learning is actually fun, then you may find that their learning improves dramatically. Spend time after school doing fun school work at home, from school-like science experiments to field trips to local sites of educational interest. Teach your child that learning can be fun and you will be amazed at the improvements in their learning.

If your child is struggling at school, it can be worrying to hear about it, but the fact is once you know you can do something about it. At one point or another, most children end up getting a little behind, so don’t stress about it, instead focus on ways that you can help them to get back on track.
