New Mum Must Haves

There are not many things you REALLY need as a first time mum, as it turns out babies actually need very little.  That doesn’t mean we need to go all martyr about it and not get anything.  There are a few new mum must haves, that make life just a little bit easier.

Thinking back to the stuff I picked up after my boy arrived, thinking it was a non essential or something I just didn’t know about.  These are a few of the items that were recommended or gifted to be from fellow mum friends, that I really couldn’t and in some cases still can’t live without…

Melobaby Nappy Tote

I still use this now!  I’m not a nappy bag kind of mum, I had a bunch of great handbags and I’d rather look and feel like me, with a smart solution for babies nappies.  One of my uber stylish friends raved about it when we caught up soon after I’d had my baby.  She looked so cool and together with a bub 4 months older than mine.  I felt like a hot mess and really did not have it together.  THIS helped me, feel a bit more like me, allowing me to ditch the nappy bag and get back to a nice handbag.  LOVE IT!  My turn now to rave about it to all of my expecting friends.  Two under two, no worries – just get one for each kid in different colours and chuck them under the pram.  My better half also loves this as it’s easy to throw under the pram or in the car and he doesn’t need to take a man bag.

Breastfeeding Cover

After watching a couple of the mums in my mothers group pull these out and happily feed away without flashing to the world as their baby stopped to check out the surroundings.  This was ordered online, that night.  Game changer… I get not everyone feels the need to cover up, I personally felt more comfortable and less panicked knowing I could sit and cover up than having to find a private space away from the world.  I tried doing the cool muslin and scarf thing, but was a total tangle with nothing covering anything important and ending up with niplash on a severe level.  The cover made life easier for me.

Drink Bottle

Random, but if you are breastfeeding, you will feel a thirst you have never felt before.  You’re also about to embark on months of long walks with the pram, so hydrate, hydrate, hydrate ladies.  My sister in law kindly gifted me one of these awesome bottles for Christmas before my baby arrived.  I didn’t really get it at the time, now I do!  Life Factory also do gorgeous glass baby bottles with a sippy lid attachment that I’m in love with as well.

Muslins

You’ll likely end up with loads of these, but hunt for some cute ones to use as a shade on your pram.  Aside from swaddling, they are great to keep handy for a sunshade, picnic rug, spew rag or to wrap a nude child in after they have had an epic poonami.

Boon Grass Drying Rack

We received this as a baby shower gift with the Twig.  So handy for drying bottles, breast pump bits and pieces, dummies, sippy cups, spoons etc.  Added bonus it looks cool on the bench!  This has become a fairly standard baby shower gift from us.  Still in use at 2 years, more for wine glass drying now, so handy!

Feeding Chair in the Nursery

Get one, your back will save you.  Team it with a feeding pillow for some extra support.  The my breast friend worked for me – lame name, awesome product, although be warned you do look like your about to do a round selling choc tops at the theatre.  Back to the chair, having a space in the nursery with good back support is brilliant and makes the whole over night months a lot more comfortable.  Get a cosy blanket and snuggle in, everyone says it, but when you catch up on sleep, you will miss the quiet snuggles of overnight feeds.

Dummy Holder

If you choose to use dummies, get one or two of these.  It will save you licking filthy dummies and catch them before they hit the deck.  Shop early to get something cute or it will end up being a frustrated chemist run for an ugly ribbon that you have to look at for ages and it probably won’t go with any of your kids cute outfits.  Just sayin!

Wet / Dry bags

You can use snap lock bags as well which are quite handy being clear so you can see whats in them.  Either is good – the choice may depend on how eco you are.  It’s one thing to have a neat system to keep your babies change of clothes together in one place.  It’s an even better solution when you realise that most of the times you need to use the spare outfit is because it’s covered in some bodily function.  Feel smug slipping those filthy clothes into a bag and keeping everything clean. I have known friends to discard their favourite baby outfit after there was no option to get it home with out a safe place to store it.  As your baby gets bigger, these are great for wet swimming gear or even keeping toys organised when you travel.

I’m sure there are more great things, like apps, lactation cookies, the plastic rings that let you attach everything to your pram, pram organisers, a new phone for the zillion pics you will take every day etc,  there is so much stuff to find out about!

These just are some of my favs that made new mum life a little easier and I hope they help you too.  Have you found something awesome?  Let us know!
